Never encountered a printer that would not work w/o both cartridges. In other words, would print a lot of black/white. Didn't need color. But though both cartridges were in place (color-empty) the machine would not print black/white. I found that strange. When we then ordered and installed the color, the machine worked fine. Was just trying to save money for seniors!!
